Bridge 47 – Building Global Citizenship project is hosting an event bringing approximately 200 participants to Helsinki in November. The event focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as they present a unique opportunity to intensify European cooperation to advance sustainable development and social justice. SDG Target 4.7 in particular, bound with the social, humanistic and moral purposes of education, is not only a target in itself, but rather precisely captures the importance and power of lifelong learning in achieving the global sustainable development agenda and transforming our societies – making them sustainable and inhabitable for future generations.
The European Commission is currently in the process of finalizing its SDG implementation strategy 2019-2024 and it has been recognized that a more holistic approach is needed for SDG implementation to be successful. We hope that this event will be the catalyst for securing political will to advance SDG Target 4.7 in the new parliament (2019-2024), the new European Commission, and beyond. In December 2018, UNESCO hosted a meeting with representatives from UN Agencies, European institutions, national delegations and civil society actors where they re-iterated their commitment for the implementation of SDG 4. This event will take that commitment one step further, turning intentions into practice.
This event is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland and UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU).
This event will bring together civil servants from EU countries along with civil society to discuss the way forward to intensified collaboration for implementation of SDG Target 4.7. It is our hope that the importance of value-based education and education for active citizenship will be strengthened; the aspects and characteristics of Global Citizenship Education will be enshrined in EU institutions, contributing to better policy coherence for SDGs as well as programmes and initiatives supporting lifelong learning in all EU countries. This will result in a more holistic approach to implementing the SDGs in Europe and beyond, and work towards individual, collective, and systematic transformation.
• A roadmap and commitment for working towards a holistic approach to SDG Target 4.7 in Europe
• Closer relationships between civil servants and NGO platforms around value-based education
This event will offer opportunities for participants and member state representatives to co-create the direction of the implementation of Target 4.7 in Europe and beyond. The format will include:
• Keynote presentations which will add a global dimension to SDG Target 4.7 and contextualize this pioneering step
• Interactive sessions to learn from one another's current practice in SDG Target 4.7
• Breakout sessions for small working groups
• Showcasing opportunities through exhibition stalls
• Facilitated networking
